NEW STUDY SHOWS BENEFITS OF STATINS FAR OUTWEIGH POTENTIAL RISKS
A large scale review of the current findings shows that the cardiovascular benefits of statin therapy far outweighs the risks. Exaggerated claims about adverse effects may be responsible for needlessly discouraging statin use by patients who are at increased risk for cardiovascular events. The review was conducted by researchers who have made substantial contributions to the science of statins.
This study shows that after the first year, continued statin therapy reduces the risk for major vascular events each year by about 25% for each corresponding reduction in low-density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol.
Continued statin therapy reduces vascular disease risk each year it is taken. Greater health benefits are found with prolonged therapy and persist long term.
Placebo-controlled randomized trials show that nearly all symptomatic adverse events attributed to statins in routine practice, such as muscle pain or weakness, are not caused by statin therapy.
